Each week, a group of local gentlemen in Gateshead aged 65 and over come together to share a two-course meal and refreshments and enjoy a range of activities.
Its a great way to stay connected, share stories and lots of laughs with other local gents.
This week, the group marked VE Day, a significant moment in UK history.

The Importance of Weekly Gatherings for Men Over 65
Social connection plays a vital role in maintaining mental and emotional health, especially as people age. For many men over 65, opportunities to meet regularly with peers can become limited. Weekly gatherings like ours offer a structured, welcoming environment where men can:
Share experiences and memories
Participate in group activities that stimulate the mind and body
Enjoy nutritious meals together
Build a support network that combats loneliness
These groups help create a sense of belonging and purpose, which is essential for wellbeing in later life.
VE Day 2026
VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, commemorates the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945. It is a day of remembrance and celebration across the UK. This week’s gathering honoured the occasion early and our centre was dressed for the occasion with English flags around the room.
Benefits of Combining Food, Activities, and Conversation
Bringing together a meal, engaging activities, and open conversation creates a rich experience that supports both physical and mental health. Here’s why this combination works well for the group:
Food: Sharing a meal encourages relaxation and social bonding. Nutritious food supports physical health.
Activities: Quizzes, games, or crafts stimulate cognitive function and provide a fun challenge.
Conversation: Talking about shared interests or memories strengthens relationships and reduces feelings of isolation.
This holistic approach makes the weekly gatherings something the men look forward to and benefit from deeply. For men over 65, this connection can improve quality of life, boost confidence, and provide emotional support. With minibus transport from home and back again in our local area, it's so easy to attend and experience first hand the many benefits of our men's groups.
