Local gents over 65 get together every week for a hot meal, plenty of refreshments, and friendly competitions at our centre in Gateshead.

One of the highlights of our men's group this week has been our table top curling! It's been such a laugh, and has so many benefits too!

How It Works

Table top curling is a great sport, designed to be played indoors on a flat surface. Players slide small balls across a smooth surface aiming for a target area, much like the full-sized game but without the need for bending or heavy equipment. This makes it much more accessible, especially for those who may have mobility challenges.

Everyone can join in who wants to, and it encourages focus and gentle physical movement, which can be adjusted to each player’s comfort level.

The social aspect is just as important, as players cheer each other on, share tips, and enjoy lighthearted competition.

Physical Benefits of Playing Table Top Curling

Even though table top curling is a low-impact activity, it offers several physical benefits:

  • Improves hand-eye coordination: Sliding the balls accurately requires steady hands and good timing.

  • Enhances fine motor skills: Gripping and releasing the balls helps maintain dexterity.

  • Encourages gentle stretching and movement: Reaching across the table and bending, even slightly, promotes flexibility.

  • Supports balance and posture: Standing or sitting upright during play helps maintain core strength.

Other Benefits

  • Boosts concentration and strategic thinking: Players plan their moves to outscore opponents, keeping the brain active.

  • Reduces stress and anxiety: The friendly environment and focus on the game help distract from worries.

  • Builds confidence: Mastering the game and improving skills gives a sense of achievement.

  • Encourages happiness: The social setting and playful competition create lovely memories and a sense of happiness.

Strengthening Connections Through Group Play

Group activities like this have so many benefits:

  • Friendship and companionship: Regular meetings create opportunities to meet new people and deepen existing relationships.

  • Teamwork and communication: Players discuss strategies and cheer each other on, enhancing social skills.

  • Sense of belonging: Being part of a group reduces feelings of loneliness and promotes well-being.

  • Shared memories: The laughter and stories from game sessions become treasured moments.

Each of our groups offers minibus transport from home and back again, making it easy for people to get to and from our centre to take part in our activities who would otherwise struggle to get here.

Enjoying Good Food and Refreshments Together

There's a two course meal at every group. Sharing food adds another layer of connection and comfort:

  • Nourishes the body: Balanced meals support health and energy.

  • Encourages conversation: Mealtime sparks discussions beyond the game.

  • Creates a welcoming atmosphere: The warmth of food and drink complements the friendly setting.
