This week’s lunch club had all the familiar ingredients.

A warm welcome, a freshly prepared two-course meal, and the comfort of friendship and conversation.

But later in the day, there was someone extra special in the room! A four-legged visitor whose presence turned our wonderful day into something truly memorable.

Dog with red bandana visits a care home, interacting with residents. People smile and pet the dog in a cozy, bright room.

A Great Day

For many older people who attend day centres like ours, these gatherings are a vital source of connection. They offer nourishment, companionship, routine, something to look forward to, and a sense of belonging.

Adding a pet into that environment creates something even more fun.

Throughout the visit, it was clear how meaningful these interactions are. This little dog brought new life into the centre, and it was lovely talk about loyal pets we'd owned or known in the past. Moments like these matter. They create connection, encourage conversation, and bring comfort in a way that words sometimes cannot.

The Role of Wag & Company

The visit was made possible by Wag & Company, a remarkable charity dedicated to tackling loneliness among older dog lovers.

Founded in 2016, the organisation matches carefully assessed volunteers and their dogs with older people who may no longer be able to have a pet of their own. Their mission is simple but powerful. To ensure that no older dog lover misses out on companionship, friendship, and the joy of spending time with a dog.

What makes their work particularly special is the consistency and care behind each visit. The visits don't have to be a one-off, but can become ongoing relationships that bring something to look forward to each week.

Why Older Dogs Make a Difference

Older, calm dogs are especially well-suited to visiting environments like lunch clubs and day centres (the lovely dog who visited us was 14 years old!).

Their gentle nature, patience, and steady temperament create a relaxed atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable.

The benefits are both emotional and physical:

  • Reducing loneliness: Many older people experience isolation, and regular visits from a friendly dog can provide companionship and emotional comfort.

  • Encouraging interaction: Dogs naturally spark conversation, helping people connect with each other more easily.

  • Boosting wellbeing: Interaction with animals has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress, and even encourage movement and engagement.

  • Triggering positive memories: For lifelong dog lovers, these visits often reconnect them with happy memories.

Happy Memories

When it was time for our new furry friend to go home, it was clear that she had left a lasting impression.

Lunch clubs already play a crucial role in supporting older people by offering hot meals, activities, and friendship. But partnerships with organisations like Wag & Company show how small additions can make a big impact.
