Bridging the Digital Divide: How New Laptops and Tablets Are Transforming Our Groups

Writer's picture: tbcommunitycaretbcommunitycare

A generous grant from the Skipton Building Society Charitable Foundation has allowed our charity, Teams and Bensham Community Care, to purchase six Android tablets and two laptops for our lunch clubs and men’s groups. Since December 2024, these devices have already made such a difference for the older people who attend our sessions, helping them feel more connected, engaged, and confident with technology.

Opening Up New Possibilities

The tablets and laptops have been a fantastic addition, giving our members the chance to:

  • Play games that keep the mind active, like Scrabble, word searches, solitaire, dominoes, chess, and draughts.

  • Enjoy relaxing activities like digital colouring and jigsaws.

  • Look at photographs taken at our centre, and historical photos of the local area for example, sparking conversation and nostalgia.

  • Learn how to browse the internet and build digital skills.

  • Connect with others online, helping to reduce loneliness and isolation.

On top of that, using these devices has helped with fine motor skills, concentration, and hand-eye coordination. Many of our members initially felt unsure about technology, but their confidence has grown massively as they’ve had the chance to learn and explore in a friendly, supportive environment.

Encouraging Independence and Inclusion

Having access to the internet has also been a game-changer for many, giving them the ability to look up news, advice, and information on their own. For some, this has been their first real experience of engaging with technology, and it’s been amazing to see the joy, enthusiasm, and confidence it’s brought.

What Our Beneficiaries Say

The best way to highlight the impact of this project is to hear directly from those who have benefited:

“They’re great for playing chess. I can play against the tablet, so I’m not limited to playing with other people if no one’s available.” – Men’s club beneficiary
“They really help with my disability. I love doing the word games and puzzles—it’s keeping my brain active.” – Lunch club beneficiary
“I think the laptops are brilliant. Very informative and educational. I’d love to have one at home.” – Lunch club beneficiary
“We’ve been taking photographs with the tablets and keeping them saved in a digital album. Our lunch club and men’s group attendees love looking through them.” – Liz, Activity Coordinator
