More Than Just a Game – The Benefits of Games at our Men's Groups

Twice per week, our men’s group comes together for an afternoon of friendly competition, laughter, and connection after lunch. The games vary (chess, dominoes, draughts, card games, Scrabble, and Connect Four) but the result is always the same. Good company, great conversation, and a sense of community.

People in a communal room play chess and Connect Four. Bright tablecloth, board games, and flowers on the table create a cozy atmosphere.

Playing games like Connect Four and chess helps keep the mind active, supporting memory, focus, and problem-solving skills. Each move encourages strategy, patience, and creative thinking.

Elderly persons play a board game at a table with a yellow pattern. Blue and red discs are in play. A boxed game reads "Link Up 4".

But the benefits go beyond the brain. Games bring people together. They spark conversation, laughter, and friendly rivalry, helping to build new friendships and strengthen existing ones.

For many of our members, the men’s group is a twice-weekly highlight. A chance to get out of the house, and enjoy a hot meal and activities in the company of others. We have accessible minibus transport from home and back again too, from addresses in Teams, Bensham, Dunston, Lobley Hill, Bensham and Central Gateshead.

Our men’s groups are open to any gent aged 65 years and over who wants to join in, whether you’re a master strategist or just there for the cups of tea, hot food and good chat.

If you are aged 65 years and over and live in Gateshead and would like to come along or find out more about our men's groups, just give us a call on 0191 460 0297 or send us a message using the form below. We’d love to welcome you.
